project two: postal presents

OH MY DEER! PARTY LIGHTS! FLAT PACKED! AMAZING!

The receiver opens the C4 envelope to find these colourful and delightfully whimsy light covers that are fun and simple to assemble. They have the ability to fit over any standard fairy lights and come in a variety of colours that can be changed to suit any theme, i.e. red and green for Christmas.

The idea behind these party light covers stemmed from Mexican celebration decorations known as 'papel picado'. These elaborate decorative pieces are hung up for fiestas, usually for Christmas, Easter, weddings, and christen
ings. I had the idea to take party decorations to a different level and incorporate both party lights and papel picado in one. The light covers serve the purpose of both a party decoration and gift. The decision to embellish the covers with a more traditional American folk art design was made to bridge the gap between Mexican and American folk art, making it open to a wider market.

They make a fun and interactive gift for people of all ages. Assembly is easy as the cover is folded around and slotted together using the tabs.

Made from 0.6mm polypropylene, with the design adhered with black contact, they are able to be kept for a long period of time. Polypropylene was chosen as the sheet material for its properties; it is fairly low cost, is tough and durable, has good resistance to fatigue, and won't melt under low energy light bulbs. As the design is fixed by adhesive contact, it can be changed to give it a fresh new look as the recipient desires.

  1. I really like these party lights. It is easy to use, functional and pretty. It it also very cleverly designed because it can put into many different shapes that serves different functions. I was wondering whether you can create shadows of the pattern.

  2. This is a very cute idea, the aesthetics a great and really work with your mexican influence. I love your deer design! its really lovely, i would love to have these in my room! my only criticism would have to be perhaps changing the shape so the beautiful design could be seen more obviously.
    WELL DONE!

  3. So playful! The colour choices really are magnificent and couldn't be better for this product. They really are flat pack in its simplest form and that really helps make them so effective.
I'd love to see some more experimentation with different shapes to both increase market potential and play with the shadows and colours projected through the material.
Polypropylene was definitely the right choice and it's great to see that you've put thought into the heat resistance of the material.

  4. awww these are very cute! I like how you have thought about your design of the pattern and how it will reflect the shape that the fairy lights take.

An improvement would be, as others have said to play with the shadows this pattern will create by maybe placing the fairy lights in the center of the shade and having a thinner material.

  5. Your idea of making such a party light is wonderful. It is great that not only every single piece can be simply assembled and be used as a single light but also we can assemble several pieces together to get another light style. Your chose to use different colors makes your product has a more beautiful appearance and I think it is also a good choice to add pleasure to your receiver. One more, I quite like the pattern on your light, it’s so cute. I just wonder whether the material you chose is resistant to elevated temperatures. As a whole, well done:)If I can receive such a gift, that will be great!
